GLA for Arthritis

Gamma Linolenic Acid

  Evening Primrose Oil by Solaray

GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid), what is it, and where is it found? GLA is part of Omega-6 group of essential fatty acids, the group that most people tend to overconsume, and lots of people now try to avoid believing that these fatty acids are bad for them. Consuming too much of the Omega-6s may not be good for you, however, the health giving , anti-inflammatory properties of GLA should form an important part of everyone's diet, and are most definitely needed by those with inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, and gout.

The best way  to access a rich source of GLA, without taking on board too much Omega6 is to take one of these three oils, or a mixture of all three. The richest source of GLA is Borage oil which contains up to 24%GLA, followed by Black Currant seed oil with 18% GLA, and the Evening Primrose oil with 8% GLA.

In an ideal situation assuming that a wide range of fresh wholesome organic foods form the mainstay of the diet, and you don't take prescription drugs, alcohol, and don't smoke, and of course don't have a degenerative disease, then healthy cells are capable of converting LA ( linoleic acid) into GLA. However, inferior diets overloaded with refined processed food and saturated fats, processed vegetable oils, margarines, and too much meat will manage to block the conversion of LA to GLA.

Essential fatty acids are precursors to prostaglandins, these hormone-like substances play a diverse role in many bodily functions, one of the functions of particular interest to arthritis sufferers is their anti-inflammatory action. What GLA can manage to achieve if taken on a regular basis, together with a healthy diet should convince you to make the effort to add one or all three of these oils to your diet.

The following conditions may benefit from GLA: Multiple Sclerosis, diabetic neuropathy, premenstrual breast pain, Sjorgen's Syndrome, cancer, obesity, hypertension, mental illness, eczema, arthritis, and gout. Arthritis sufferers have experienced improved mobility, relief of morning stiffness, and inflammation from the addition of GLA to their diet. Then of course the added bonus if you add these oils to an already  healthy diet will be a glowing soft velvety skin, strong healthy nails, and healthy shining hair  that alone might motivate you to give GLA a try.
