The Benefits of Digestive
Enzymes
Enzymes are energized protein molecules,
they act as catalysts, accelerating and precipitating the
thousands of biochemical reactions in the body. A catalyst is a
substance which alters the rate of a chemical reaction, without
itself being permanently changed into another compound.
Each enzyme in the body has a particular function, which no
other enzyme can fulfill.
The enzymes of concern here are the digestive
enzymes, these include: Salivary amylase, sometimes called
ptyalin, this initiates the breakdown of starches in the mouth.
If starches are swallowed without proper mastication of the
food in the mouth, then starch digestion is incomplete. Any
amylase swallowed with the food will continue to act on the
starches for some minutes, before the stomach acids inactivate
it.
Digestion in the stomach is mostly achieved
through the enzyme pepsin, which is a protein digesting enzyme.
Here proteolytic activity is not critical, for the pancreas
produces far more powerful proteolytic enzymes, and it is these
enzymes which achieve complete digestion of most proteins. The
pancreatic enzymes include: trypsin, chymotrypsin, elastase,
amino pepditase, and carboxypeptidase. Pancreatic lipase
digests emulsified fats, this is a slow process taking many
hours.
While the body manufactures its own enzymes,
they can also be obtained from food, however, cooking destroys
enzymes. If the diet consists mostly of raw vegetables, fruit,
and nuts, enzyme deficiencies would not occur. Unfortunately
the majority of people consume mostly cooked food, with very
little raw food added.
Enzyme deficiencies occur as a result of eating
highly processed food, fast food, and over consumption of
saturated fats and sugars. Also enzyme activity slows with the
aging process, in fact, aging has been referred to by some
researchers as nothing more than a severe enzyme deficiency.
Often digestion generally slows in the aged, food is improperly
digested, often the diet is inferior, chronic illness may
interfere with digestion, as well as prescription
drugs.
So many digestive ailments are an indication of
enzyme deficiencies, bloating, acid reflux, gas, diarrhea,
nausea, constipation, sleepiness after eating, excessive
burping, and general abdominal discomfort , indicate an enzyme
deficiency.
Apart from digestive ailments, any number of
present day diseases can be resolved, by the addition of
digestive enzyme supplements added to the diet on a daily
basis. The enzyme store carries a superior range of Wobenzym
supplements, this particular brand of enzyme contains all the
essential protein digesting enzymes, which have a proven
track record for healing many chronic diseases.
